Job Opening: Orange County Organizing Director

Orange County - CA-39, CA-45, and CA-48 Congressional Districts

Location: Orange County 

Position Summary:

The California Democratic Party seeks an experienced community organizing director with a background in campaign field organizing. This candidate should be adept at developing and coordinating advocacy activities—from organizing coalition meetings, press and media relations, town halls (and other events); as well as recruiting and organizing a volunteer voter contact operation to support a district-wide precinct program.

Strong communication and motivational skills, work ethic, and passion for issue advocacy are essential. Candidates must be able to work within a progressive coalition team, have proven leadership ability, time management skills, and experience handling a lot of responsibility. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. The position would be based in Orange County, with small portions of eastern Los Angeles County.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Development, implementation and monitoring of strategies to carry out media-focused advocacy and demonstrations;
  • Support and continue to build a large coalition membership and network to support a regional and advocacy agenda, focused on flipping the current CA-39, CA-45, and CA-48 Congressional seats in 2018;
  • Develop and manage systems to support organizers on story collection, membership development, list building, and coalition building;
  • Help organize press conferences, actions, and other events to support holding the incumbent Congressman accountable on priority issues;
  • Serve as a regional spokesperson for the organization, including giving presentations to groups, and testimony to support the program goals and needs;
  • Build strategic partnerships and alliances among diverse groups and constituencies in the region;
  • Recruit new members, volunteers, and affiliates to the coalition;
  • Working and communicating regularly with our State Field Director for the Program; promote effective communication by increasing presence in online social networks, sending email blasts, and responding promptly to email and phone inquiries;
  • Keep consistent records about meetings, events, contacts, and work schedule on a centralized calendar.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent relevant work experience;
  • Proficient in voter database systems, such as Votebuilder or PDI, and Excel;
  • Previous campaign field management experience required; ability to meet voter contact and recruitment goals;
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of relevant community or political organizing/advocacy experience required;
  • An independent thinker, self-motivated, problem solver, and team player, with a commitment to excellence;
  • Have strong organizational skills, and ability to stay focused with attention to detail;
  • Experience with social media, online organizing strategies, and content development a plus;
  • Excellent speaking and writing, and analytical skills. Able to translate complex policy into clear and actionable language in person and on paper.

Language and Communication Skills:

  • Strong public speaking, writing, and analytical skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and relational skills;
  • Experience supervising and training organizers strongly preferred;
  • Must be able to meet deadlines, be responsive, stay organized, attention to detail, and demonstrate excellent communication skills;
  • Read, comprehend and write general instructions, professional correspondence, and memos;
  • Ability to collaborate and participate in complex decision-making processes;
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations;
  • Analytical approach to problem-solving;
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus but not required.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • An independent thinker and problem-solver, a planner who is also self-motivated and a team player;
  • Support the CDP’s goal to take back the Congressional seat in 2018;
  • Ability to meet multiple shifting deadlines and priorities with nimbleness and flexibility while maintaining a perspective on long-term goals.
