Job Opening: Executive Director

Location: Sacramento

Responsible to: State Party Chair, the Executive Director will have overall strategic, operational and financial/fiscal responsibility for the California Democratic Party’s staff, programs, and budget.

Description: We are seeking a self-driven and highly competent Executive Director to lead our organization by designing and implementing strategies that support and enhance our organizational operations.  Duties for the Executive Director will include providing leadership to all staff, establishing and executing strategic electoral and financial goals, overseeing and streamlining daily operations, improving staff performance, ensuring fiscal compliance, and maintaining positive relationships with internal and external partners. The Executive Director is responsible for well-managed Party programs that build the Party at the grassroots level, strengthen infrastructure and effectively execute the vision of the Chair.

The ideal candidate must possess strong leadership skills, outstanding communication skills, and excellent planning and organizational skills.

 

Specifically, the Executive Director Responsibilities include:

Staffing and Party Support

  • Work closely with the State Party Chair and with the officers to set goals and priorities for the State Party;
  • Supervise a permanent staff and a campaign staff that grows exponentially during election season;
  • Provide guidance and mentoring and set staff priorities to reflect changing needs; includes the management of staffers in remote offices;
  • Interview and hire additional staff when conditions warrant;
  • Work with staff to organize all meetings and trainings of the Democratic State Central Committee and the Executive Board; and
  • Ensure efficient day-to-day party operations.

 

Campaign and Outreach

  • Serve as the lead of all political programs;
  • Represent party interests and oversee coordinated campaign activities to ensure political and fiscal compliance;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with national and state leaders, elected officials, strategic partners, key constituencies, and donors;
  • Attend regular coalition meetings with partner organizations;
  • Work closely with the State Chair to issue press releases and respond to media inquiries; and
  • Represent the State Party in a positive, professional manner at all times

 

 Financial

  • Work closely with the State Chair and strategic partners to develop and adhere to an operating budget and a coordinated campaign budget;
  • Keep an updated and working knowledge of campaign finance, election and compliance laws, oversee the Fiscal Compliance Department and work with legal counsel to ensure all Party activities are complaint; and
  • Oversee fundraising efforts, including large and small-donor events, and online fundraising.

 

 Executive Director Requirements:

  • Direct campaign experience including executive experience working on a coordinated campaign, statewide, or congressional campaign preferred;
  • Knowledge and understanding of political dynamics within California;
  • Experience managing a skilled team and volunteers;
  • Exceptionally strong time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously under strict deadlines;
  • Familiarity with budgeting and both federal and state campaign finance laws;
  • Responsive and positive team leader who is versatile and is motivated by constant new challenges;
  • Exceptional people skills and patience;
  • Excellent verbal, written and analytical skills; and
  • An unwavering commitment to Democratic values.
