Resolution Calling for an End to the United States’ Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade against Cuba

RESOLUTION 16-06.29

Resolution Calling for an End to the United States’ Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade against Cuba

WHEREAS in 1960, the United States government imposed an economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, which continues to be in place, inflicting hardship on the men, women and children of Cuba by creating
shortages of food, medicines and financial and trade opportunities, and denying U.S. citizens access to Cuban medical technology; and

WHEREAS on December 17, 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced a new era of relations between the two countries, and agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations, and have re-opened their respective embassies in 2015, and President Obama has now been welcomed in Cuba; and

WHEREAS 191 countries voted at the United Nations General Assembly in October 2015 in favor of lifting the U.S. blockade against Cuba; the majority of the people of the United States believe this blockade is ineffective, inhumane and in violation of U.S. laws and international conventions; and wish to have access to Cuban medical technology;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the California Democratic Party calls for an immediate end to the United States’ economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba in all its manifestations.
