Statement From California Democratic Party Chair on Donald Trump's Remarks in Puerto Rico

California Democratic Party Chair Eric C. Bauman released the following statement in reaction to Donald Trump's remarks in Puerto Rico, where he suggested Hurricane Maria wasn't a "real catastrophe" like Hurricane Katrina and complained that disaster relief for Puerto Rico will impact the budget:

Donald Trump’s comments about Puerto Rico were simply nauseating. More than three million American citizens are trapped on an island with no power, no food, no medicine and no fuel—and Trump’s only thought is about how this disaster makes it harder for him to budget. The unfolding humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico is unprecedented in America, and the Trump Administration’s response has been criminally negligent.

Let’s be absolutely clear: the unfolding crisis in Puerto Rico is one of the worst disasters in American history. To minimize Hurricane Maria’s impact, as if the near destruction of the entire island is somehow a lesser disaster than Hurricane Katrina displays breathtaking insensitivity, stupidity and crassness. Congress must stand up for Puerto Rico as it is painfully obvious Donald Trump will not.”
