CDP Update 11.22.17

It's been another productive week for the CDP. See below for a recap of the week's activities.

Executive Board Recap
The CDP Executive Board met this past weekend in Millbrae. Once again, general session was livestreamed on the CDP facebook page. More than 2,000 people watched all or some of the broadcast, and that’s an undeniable sign of the energy and enthusiasm among Democrats. Chair Bauman and the statewide officers are proud of this extraordinary response to their efforts to make our proceedings more accessible and transparent, and they’re determined to livestream even more in the future.

The theme of the Executive Board was a celebration of California’s rich, vibrant and diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Our opening invocation was delivered by Sonia Dhami, Executive Director of the Sikh Foundation, and Ravinder Dhillon, a Punjabi interpreter at Stanford Hospitals. November is California Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month. California has been a home to the Sikh community for more than a century, and has the largest Sikh American population in the United States, and we were deeply honored to having such a moving and beautiful invocation that celebrates the great diversity of California.

Our Executive Board luncheon featured a panel discussion on immigration from the AAPI perspective, with a panel consisting of Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Rep. Judy Chu, and CAPAC members Rep. Barbara Lee and Rep. Ro Khanna. The full Executive Board was addressed by some of California’s most prominent AAPI Democrats, including State Controller Betty Yee, California Asian & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus Chair Rob Bonta, California Labor Federation Chief of Staff Angie Wei, CDP API Caucus Chair Melissa Ramoso and our Sunday keynote speaker, Rep. Ted Lieu. And we were proud to premier a new video featuring great CDP API leaders like Secretary Jenny Bach and CDP Filipino American Caucus Chair Arnel Dino. The video is a celebration of the rich and diverse AAPI Community, and the essential place AAPI Californians have in our Democratic Party. Check it out below.

We were also proud to celebrate our brothers, sisters and compatriots in the Labor Movement. Unions face many challenges at the moment. And there has never been a government more viscerally hostile to working people than the plutocrats in the Trump White House. But our message was clear, from the Chair and officers to the “Democrats Love Labor” buttons worn by practically every Executive Board Member: Democrats are proud to stand in solidarity with union members and working people across California. Check out this great video celebrating the dynamic and passionate Democrats in California’s Labor Movement.

The Executive Board members also cast a number of important votes. Executive Board members voted for resolutions calling for peace talks with North Korea, standing in solidarity with immigrants affected by the cancellation of DACA, and marking the 75th Anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which initiated the shameful and unconscionable program of rounding up and interning Japanese Americans during World War II. The Executive Board also passed a resolution, authored by Chair Eric C. Bauman and CDP Women's Caucus Chair Christine Pelosi affirming our support for the #MeToo and #WeSaidEnough campaigns, and the brave women confronting the pervasive sexual harassment that degrades and diminishes women every day.

Last (but certainly not least), the Executive Board voted to equalize the endorsement recommendation threshold for all candidates for Endorsing Caucuses held at the State Convention. Previously, incumbents only needed a simple majority to attain the endorsement recommendation at Endorsing Caucuses, but the new rules mean that all candidates, regardless of incumbency, will have to attain the same 60% threshold of valid votes cast to receive the endorsement recommendation. For more information, visit our Endorsement webpage at www.cadem.org/endorsements or see CDP Bylaws.
