California Democratic Party Chair Statement on Passing of Mayor Ed Lee

Los Angeles—California Democratic Party Chair Eric C. Bauman released the following statement in reaction to the untimely death of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee:

“Today is a day of sorrow for our entire California Democratic family. Mayor Ed Lee was the very model of a savvy and successful 21st Century mayor—deeply knowledgeable about his city, deeply committed to its success, and compassionate and friendly to all he met. He was a lifelong public servant, but what made him unique was the fact that the first and only office he ever held was Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco. He knew every facet of city government, and he made the most of that knowledge to lead San Francisco through a number of challenges, beginning with the long and hard road to recovery from the Great Recession.

I was very fortunate to spend some time with Mayor Lee at an event with the Northern California Carpenters and San Francisco Building Trades just a few days ago, and I know that the people of San Francisco will keenly feel the loss of their warm, talented and effective Mayor. In this difficult moment, our entire California Democratic Party stands united with our compatriots in San Francisco, and we are proud to stand behind Board of Supervisors President London Breed, whose long track record of service to her community and success on the Board of Supervisors will well-serve the people of the City and County of San Francisco as interim Mayor.

Baruch Dayan Ha’Emet.”
