The U.S. Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges to overturn state laws banning same-sex couples from marrying is a victory for the American ideal of equality. The recognition of loving families that started in California and Massachusetts has now swept the nation.
When I introduced Assembly Bill 167 in 1991 to change California law to permit same-sex marriage, a conservative commentator called it the “battle of the century.” This battle is now over, but it won’t end Republican-led attacks on gay Americans, and California Democrats won’t stop fighting discrimination against LGBT families and students.
