Statement of California Democratic Party Chairman John Burton on Treasurer Bill Lockyer's Retirement Announcement

It will be difficult to get used to electoral politics in California without Bill Lockyer. Having decided not to run for Controller in 2014 and upon his retirement from the office of Treasurer in 2015, Bill will leave behind an unrivaled legacy of service and accomplishment.

I've known Bill for many years and served with him in the Legislature where he was known as a straight-talking advocate on behalf of consumers and the environment.

As Attorney General, he took on energy companies that were squeezing consumers during the energy crisis in 2001. More recently as state Treasurer he was instrumental in helping to bring California's fiscal house in order together with Governor Brown and Democrats in the Legislature.

Bill's expertise and perspective will be missed but we wish him the best in his new endeavor.

Board of Equalization Member Betty Yee is the only declared candidate for Controller at this time.
