The Los Angeles Times reports that "the top staffer at the California Air Resources Board said last week that the state's landmark Global Warming Solutions Act is being derailed - and that the board itself is in jeopardy - because of mismanagement and deceit by Gov. Schwarzenegger's top aides." Air Resources Board Executive Officer Catherine Witherspoon made the accusations the day after her boss, air board Chairman William Sawyer, announced he had been fired by Schwarzenegger for refusing to follow orders to limit the number of immediate greenhouse gas regulations, and refusing to fire her. more

California, like so many other states, faces incredible transportation and infrastructure challenges. That's why so many Democrats were taken aback recently when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger released a "revised" budget plan that would slash promised increases to funding for transportation and infrastructure. Why would the governor make these kinds of cuts, which are so integral to California's economic future? more
Arnold's Budget Declares War On the Poor
June 6, 2007
What would Republicans really be if they weren't trying to wage a war on the country's poor and middle class? Unfortunately, that war has come to California in the form of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's revised budget. As the Oakland Tribune reports, Democrats are furious that Schwarzenegger's new plan "blocks a $185million cost-of-living increase for the seniors and the disabled, receiving payments from supplementary income programs." Additionally, the "proposal contain[s] controversial hikes in university tuition fees of up to 10percent and a $500 million slash in welfare rolls." California's most vulnerable citizens remain "in the free-fire zone," Perata said. Sen. Leland Yee, a Democrat who represents the San Francisco and Peninsula areas, said he was "disappointed to see the governor continue to cut programs for poor children, the mentally ill and the disabled." more

Arnold's "Reform" Rhetoric vs. His Pay to Play Behavior
Posted March 23, 2007
Arnold Schwarzenegger is an entertaining actor. He can go on screen and pretend to be something he's not. Sadly, he's trying to use the same skills as governor - going in front of the people of California, saying one thing, and then doing another when the cameras turn off. Only this time, he's getting caught. Specifically, Schwarzenegger is being hounded for claiming he wants to reform political fundraising while engaging in the worst, most nefarious kinds of fundraising: the kind that trades big cash for legislative favors. In a series of stories, California newspapers have caught Schwarzenegger claiming to be a reformer while aggressively shaking down huge donors for cash. more

Dems Keep Pushing Arnold On Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Posted March 2, 2007
The Los Angeles Times reports that "impatient with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's leadership in combating global warming, leaders of the Democratic-controlled state Senate unveiled a sweeping legislative package last week that would impose new regulations on industries and government agencies." The Associated Press reports that Senate Democrats said "Schwarzenegger has spent too much time touting the landmark legislation the state passed last year and not enough time acting on it." Senate Democrats "successfully fought inclusion of a mandatory market trading system in last year's law, Assembly Bill 32, but now contend that the Republican governor is promoting it while moving too slowly on regulation." more
