Jack O’Connell was elected to a second four-year term as State Superintendent of Public Instruction on June 6, 2006. He was first elected to serve as California’s 26th State Superintendent on November 5, 2002. O’Connell was first elected to the 35th State Assembly District in 1982 and was reelected by wide margins thereafter, once garnering both the Republican and the Democratic nominations. In 1994, O’Connell was elected to the 18th State Senate District on California’s Central Coast and easily won reelection in 1998.
"As California Superintendent of Public Instruction, I am committed to provide leadership, assistance, oversight, and resources to our schools so that every Californian has access to an education that meets world-class standards. Our students and our schools are making progress in nearly every grade, but we still have a long way to go to prepare all students for success in the increasingly competitive global economy. It is imperative that we find ways to close the achievement gap that leaves too many of our children who are often poor, African American or Hispanic trailing behind their peers. We must close the achievement gap by finding strategies to ensure that those who struggle the most get the assistance they need to achieve academically and fulfill their maximum potential. I am committed finding these best practices and sharing them with others in the education community. I will also continue to work on high school reform so every student will graduate well prepared for college or the world of work, and to be engaged citizens who contribute positively to their communities." -- -- Jack O’Connell, Superintendent of Public Instruction |
