Judy Chu was elected to the State Board of Equalization in November 2006. She represents the Board's fourth district, which includes over 8 million residents in Los Angeles County. Dr. Chu previously served as an Assembly Member from the 49th district. Prior to the State Assembly, Dr. Chu served on the Monterey Park City Council for thirteen years from 1988 to 2001, and served as mayor three times.
"If you care about money for education, healthcare and human services, then you need to care about the Board of Equalization. It is critical to the lives of every single Californian because it collects $50 billion for the State of California through sales tax, multi-jurisdictional property taxes and fees. This is nearly 40% of the state budget! The Board makes key tax decisions, many with multimillion dollar implications, and it is important to have people sitting on that board who will look out for the interests of the people of California. As one of California's 12 state constitutional officers representing 8.5 million people in Los Angeles County, I am committed to improving our system for collecting the tax dollars that we are owed, while also building a seamless, fair tax system that allows our small businesses to achieve the American dream. With this year's budget deficit of $5.5 billion, we must ensure the revenue that enables California students to learn, our residents to be healthy and our environment to be clean." -- -- Judy Chu, Member, California Board of Equalization, Fourth District |
