As Democrats Convention kicks off in San Jose … Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins, State Controller Betty T. Yee and CalEITC4Me Chair Joseph Sanberg promote volunteer effort for tax season
SAN JOSE – Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins, State Controller Betty T. Yee, and Joseph N. Sanberg, CalEITC4Me Chair will join California Democratic Party volunteers for a press conference to announce a tax-season push to help California’s working poor qualify for the state’s new Earned Income Tax Credit. The press conference will be on Friday, February 26, 2016, NOON-12:30 PM as the Democrats State Convention opens in San Jose.
Led by Speaker Atkins and Governor Jerry Brown, California legislators created the $380 million Cal Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) in 2015. Combined with the federal earned income tax credit, it could bring a $2.3 billion stimulus for California’s economy.
“The economy is getting stronger day by day, but it’s taking time for the recovery to reach all Californians. This tax credit will help the lowest income working families and individuals,” said Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins. “However, for the state EITC to work to its full power, and help the maximum number of families and communities, we need to get the word out.”
Nearly 600,000 Californians are eligible to apply, and a family could receive an average cash back refund of $900 at tax time. As many as 90,000 are eligible in the Bay Area, this includes up to 20,000 who are eligible in Santa Clara County.
"California's Earned Income Tax Credit will provide a much needed boost to low-income working families and to local economies, relieving the financial burden of daily living expenses for hundreds of thousands of families,” said State Controller Betty T. Yee. “This benefit is a matter of fairness to ensure these families are not left behind in our economic recovery."
“The earned income tax credit is a good deal for working people and shows our leaders are serious about fighting poverty in our state,” said California Democratic Party Chairman John Burton.
The California Democratic Party is joining forces with CalEITC4Me, a statewide campaign involving community, faith, civic, labor and business leaders to ensure that the first-ever CalEITC winds up in the hands of those who worked hard to earn it. California Democratic Party volunteers will help educate Californians about the free resources including professional tax-filing assistance available to them.
“Last year, $1.8 billion in potentially life-changing federal EITC refunds went unclaimed by eligible working Californians. We welcome the Democratic Party in joining forces with the Governor, Speaker Atkins, Controller Yee and our hundreds of partners across the state to reach as many Californians as possible who are eligible for the federal and now a new state EITC this tax season,” said Joseph N. Sanberg, CalEITC4Me Chair. “It requires all of us playing a role in connecting with eligible families and individuals where they live, eat, work, worship and shop, and their partnership is going to help us do just that.”
Californians must file their taxes by April 18 to qualify for the new credit. Single mothers working part-time are the largest groups of Californians who are eligible to receive the new Earned Income Tax Credit. An eligibility calculator is available at www.CalEITC4Me.org.
