Statement of CDP LGBT Caucus co-chairs, Clark Williams and Pat Washington, on Harvey Milk Day

On May 22, throughout California, across the nation and around the globe, people everywhere are honoring the legacy of the American civil rights leader, Harvey Milk.

34 years following Milk's assassination, his message of hope continues to inspire a global movement committed to equality for millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people eager to participate in their nation's political, social, legal and civic institutions.

For evidence of how Harvey Milk's vision of LGBT equality continues to resonate, we can look no further than President Obama's recent historic announcement pledging support for marriage equality. President Obama's courage and determination to stand up for equality for all reflects remarkable progress made towards fulfilling Milk's vision of full LGBT equality.

Yet we still have a long way to go. Across America, LGBT families continue to face broad discrimination in our nation's institutions as they are routinely denied equal rights and equal treatment in many areas of federal and state law. Despite greater awareness and sensitivity towards the inequalities faced by LGBT Americans, the LGBT community continues to face prejudice, discrimination and violence.

As we celebrate the momentous announcement from the White House, our march towards LGBT equality continues with even greater determination and spirit. As Milk once said, "I know you can't live on hope alone but, without it, life isn't worth living. And you, and you, and you, and you have got to give them hope."

So, on Harvey Milk Day, we ask all Californian's to join together in honoring Harvey Milk's compelling message of hope and to join in the global movement dedicated to full equality for LGBT people everywhere.
