Democrats in California, and in particular those on the central coast, mourn the passing of longtime Democratic and community activist Selma Rubin. Selma died last week just two weeks shy of her 97th birthday.
Selma was spurred to action by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, at the time the largest oil spill in U.S. history, and the central coast would never be the same. She worked tirelessly on causes, large and small, making her community and our world a better place.
She was a founder or board member of numerous social justice organizations, including the founding board for the first Earth Day. While she received hundreds of awards for her service, she accepted each one humbly and immediately went back to work making her community and our state a better place.
She will be missed.
