Hip-Hop and World Beat Band Ozomatli To Play Saturday Night Concert
Sacramento – The California Democratic Party will host its annual state convention in Sacramento this coming weekend of April 29 – May 1, 2011. The event, held at the Sacramento Convention Center, promises to be the largest gathering of California Democrats since the Party swept all nine statewide offices on the ballot in 2010, bucking a national Republican trend.
All statewide Democratic officeholders are expected to speak at this year's convention, culminating with Governor Jerry Brown's general session address on Sunday.
U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich will headline Saturday’s lunch and dinner programs respectively.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will be the convention's keynote speaker, marking the first time an Independent has been selected for the honor. Senator Sanders is one of the U.S. Senate's two Independents and caucuses with the Democratic Party in that institution.
"We have a lot to celebrate coming off an amazing election cycle that saw Democrats capture every single statewide office in the state and even saw us pick up a seat in the state legislature," said John Burton, Chairman of the California Democratic Party. "There's much to celebrate but there's plenty of work ahead of us and we can't let up, even for a moment. While clearly on the downslope, Republicans in California are dead set against helping to turn the state around as we've seen during the state budget negotiations. We'll have to pull twice as hard to overcome their intransigence."
The weekend will be filled with workshops and networking opportunities for Party delegates as well as a special Saturday night concert by Southern California hip-hop and world beat performance group Ozomatli. The concert will benefit the California Democratic Party's Donate Every Month (DEM) program that encourages donors to make a small, monthly contribution via credit or debit account every month.
