AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and Political Blogger Arianna Huffington Also Speaking; Los Lobos To Play At Special Saturday Night Concert
Sacramento – The California Democratic Party will host its 2010 convention this weekend, returning to Los Angeles for the first time in five years. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senator Barbara Boxer, Attorney General Jerry Brown, The Honorable Hilda L. Solis and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will be among the featured speakers.
The convention takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center and JW Marriott at LA Live facility in downtown Los Angeles. For a full convention agenda, speakers list, information on lodging and registration go to: www.cademconvention.com
The Saturday dinner will feature special guest Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO. Arianna Huffington, progressive blogger and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post, will speak at Saturday’s luncheon.
"California Democrats are energized this year and we’re focused on victory in November," said John Burton, chairman of the California Democratic Party. "From doing the heavy lifting on health care reform and fighting to bring jobs to California, we’ve got a lot to be proud of but there’s still much work to be done. Republican billionaires and millionaires are trying to buy the Governor’s office and California’s U.S. Senate seat and we’ll have to work twice as hard to make sure the voices of working families are heard and that Democrats get elected in November."
The convention kicks off Friday night with a "Blue Carpet Premiere" reception hosted by Chairman Burton and Mayor Villaraigosa.
In addition, the East Los Angeles band Los Lobos will play a special benefit concert Saturday night with funds going to the Party’s voter registration and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) effort in November.
More than 3,000 attendees -- delegates, activists, volunteers and members of the press -- are expected at this year’s convention, the first under the new chairmanship of John Burton.
