Debra Bowen was elected to be California’s 30th Secretary of State on November 7, 2006, making her only the sixth woman elected to a statewide constitutional office since California was admitted to the Union in 1850. Bowen was elected to represent the 53rd Assembly District in 1992 and served three two-year terms before being elected to represent the 28th Senate District in 1998. Bowen served two four-year terms in the Senate before she was elected as California’s Secretary of State.
"As California’s chief elections officer, the Secretary of State is the guardian of our democracy. Every citizen has the right to register to vote and vote in a fair election where their ballot is counted as it was cast. The Secretary of State plays a key role in making government and the business world more transparent by providing public access to a wide range of corporate, lobbying, campaign finance, and election records. Restoring voter confidence and reaching out to voters are big priorities for me. Technology provides many tools to engage voters on a non-partisan basis – and being above partisanship is something every voter has the right to expect from their Secretary of State." -- -- Debra Bowen |
