Proposed 2008 Budget Cuts

$4.3 billion in education cuts:

  • Teacher lay-offs
  • Classroom program cuts
  • Other social services for children reduced
    • Special education funding
    • School lunch program
    • Child development programs
    • Before and after school programs

$1.1 billion in higher education cuts:

  • UC and CSU
  • Community colleges
  • Student aid services

$2.6 billion in health and human services cuts:

  • Public hospitals
  • Medi-Cal
  • Children’s health programs
  • Genetically handicapped persons programs
  • Communicable disease programs
  • Developmental disabilities programs
  • Mental health programs
  • Basic living expenses for food, clothing, and shelter for needy aged, blind, and disabled people
  • Programs for the deaf
  • Home health care for the elderly
  • Home-delivered meals programs
  • Alzheimer’s day care resource centers 
  • Adult protective services (protects seniors and dependent adults from predators) 
  • Domestic violence shelters

Miscellaneous cuts: 

  • Takes Supplemental Security Income disability benefits from our seniors and disabled
  • Reduces livestock health inspections
  • Reduces resources for police, sheriff and county district attorney departments
  • Reduces resources to the courts
  • Reduces emergency planning and preparedness, mutual aid response, and emergency repair funds
  • Reduces the number of eligible veterans able to receive full-time medical and nursing care
  • Eliminates electricity oversight

Yes, you read that last one right. In 1996, the Electricity Oversight Board was created to provide oversight of the state’s deregulated electricity industry in the following areas:

  • Reliability of transmission grid
  • Just and reasonable wholesale energy prices for ratepayers

In 2008? The Republicans propose eliminating ALL funding for the board. After all, California’s electrical suppliers have proven that they don’t need any governmental oversight...
